We left Arequipa Peru via bus to Tacna Peru. We then took a taxi across the border from Peru to Arica Chile. We had grown tired of the desert so we flew from Arica to Santiago. Santiago is a beautiful modern city and was more like a city in Europe. Santiago is surrounded by beautiful snow capped mountains but the city itself has a smog problem. We left Santiago via train, a very fast train. We went south to the town of Chillan where we spent the night. We left Chillan the next morning via bus bound for Puerto Montt. We sat next to a young lady who was on her way to Valpariso Chile where she was studying to be a doctor. We arrived in Puerto Montt and were met at the bus station by a lady that rented us a room in her house. The price of the room ($12.00) included breakfast the next morning which included homemade bread that she baked on an old fashioned wood cook stove. After breakfast we wandered about town then boarded our freighter/ferry for the southbound ride to Laguna De San Rafael. This was a beautiful trip dropping freight to towns along the way and on the return we picked up a complete ship load of cattle bound for Puerto Montt. Luckily our room was upwind from the cattle.
